Language Experiment

Part 1:

Communicating without symbolic language was really hard, specially that we were grown up and raised learning to talk using pointing, raising eyebrows, hands and head movements, and other symbolic language. My partners had to stay silent and communicate with me the way I was communicate with them, but it was kind of hard for them to switch back and forth, since between them there where talking regular, but with me they had to stop and start using movements only, so was kind of confusing and they did lots of mistake. Voice is always a strong method of expressing your feeling, ideas and even in fighting, Imagine two person fighting with out screaming, it wont be as effective as loud voices and screaming, so having two cultures one speak and other don’t, will effect the non specking culture, the speaking culture will express their ideas no matter how complex it was more than the culture that doesn’t use symbolic language. Hands, head and eyebrows movement is helpful in expressing feelings and ideas but not as effective as mixing them with voice notes and spoken language. As well as just talking in the same note with out movements, that will not be as helpful and the mix of both body movements and voices. The culture which speaks will have difficulties dealing with the opposite culture that doesn’t speak, it will not be easy for them to communicate. People who had diseases and have no throat to talk, they cannot use symbolic language which effect their communications with people who use it.

Part 2:

I only stood still talking in the same notes with out using any hand, heads or eyebrows no more than 6 minutes, it was a very hard experiment to finish, I was never used to talk with out notes or moving my hands and eyebrows. I asked some questions to one of the partners and it was in the same note as regular statement, and it was hard for them to figure out that it was a question. They couldn’t focus so much .Sign is the world’s one of the most powerful medium of communications, non speech language is important and useful in our daily life, because we will be put in situation where you need to express your idea with out speaking, such as quit places where talking is prohibited . Example: you are sitting in a class and needed an eraser from your classmates next to you but you cant speak, you can just do small movements in your head and eyebrows that means give me the eraser please and maybe a smile to say thank you. There are certainly people who struggle reading body language, body language becomes easier with practice, and with out practice you will suffer using it. Its always helpful and benefit the person to understand and use body language because there is a big chance to meet people who only communicate with body language and cant speak, and you have to understand them so it always good to practice on that and start using it. On the other hand not knowing body language can benefits in some situations, first it encourages the person on interacting more by talking since some people find moving so much while talking is annoying. Second, not knowing body language may reduce the chance of misunderstanding a partner’s body language which cause less problems, for example, your friend might move his hand while talking to you in away you think it was disrespectful where he/she never meant it that way.

Part 3:

Written language is very important specially for those who cant speak, every body understand written language so its easier if it was permitted, because my partners didn’t understand some words so as I, so if we used writing it would have been easy for both of to communicate with out misunderstanding each others. There are befits from using written language, first of all its suitable if you are using formal language. Second of all, it is a lot more precise and explicit than spoken language or any other types of language. Third of all, while writing you will not have expressions, so there will be less misunderstanding and lastly, around the world, written language was very effective and useful in communicating with people in all cultures, the main three advantages for having written language around the world would be:
-Being able to carry on traditions to different generations
-After the elders die out, the stories stay the same
-Once the civilization has died out other people can learn about that culture.

Human Variation and Adaption

Zulu

Environment Adaption:

South Africa enjoys five main climatic zones. This southern hemisphere country enjoys a typical desert climate on its western coast along the Atlantic Ocean and a Mediterranean climate in the Western Cape and parts of the Garden Route. warm summers and icy winters, The summer season between October and April is warm and rainy, while the winter between June and August is relatively cold and dry. Temperatures are moderate, climate change effected on physical and mental activities and on the  culture of the zulu tribes.

Physical Adaption:

Zulu tribes had a dark skin and color, which really helped them to deal with the failed work since dark skin is more acceptable to the sun the light skin, also prevented population from diseases effected by the sun.

Cultural adaption :

one example of zulu's cultural adaption are  Beads which re  a very important part of modern Zulu Culture, In Africa there are many tribes known for their elaborate and impressive beadwork, but the Zulus take first place due to their love of them. Beadwork is a craft passed on from generation to generation from mother to child. Zulus design their beadwork in wonderful geometrical patterns and designs, which one could be forgiven for thinking they were made using mathematics and geometry. Bracelets, headbands, necklaces and embroidered miniskirts are decorated with beads, but they also fulfill another purpose, they convey messages.

Race of zulu:

I would classify zulu as an African race, since Its known that zulu is originally from south Africa.

Andean Indian

Environment Adaption:

Their climate is cold at night the year around. While during the winter the snow is deep in the high mountains, there is very little on the plateau, since Peru is near the equator extending from 5 to 16 degrees south latitude. The sunshine is bright and warm even in winter. Consequently they have pasturage for their animals the year around.

Physical adaption :

This comparison test showed a physical adaption american Indians had:
The morphological characteristics of hair-roots from 15 children with classical marasmus were compared with those in 13 normal children of the same age and ethnic group. In addition to the morphological changes found in marasmus, there was a striking shift to the telogen (resting) phase of hair-growth. This difference in hair-root adaptation between marasmus and kwashiorkor is believed to be more closely related to relative chronicity than to differences in dietary protein-calorie density.

Cultural Adaption :

By the time the first European explorers arrived, the native people of the Americas had developed complex medical systems complete with diagnosis and treatment of physical as well as spiritual illnesses. Indigenous peoples derived medicines and poisons from thousands of plants such as :A MEDICINE FOR MALARIA,THE WONDERS OF THE COCA PLANT,FROM DART POISON TO MUSCLE RELAXANT,TREATMENT FOR AN EYE DISEASE.

Race:

Although its hard to address where native american originally come from but as some article  try to account fro what  is called Metissafe, between the two races (conquerors and vanquishes) , and thats what explain why Andean indians have lost their identity , despite centuries od Hispanic Influence. the race have mixed biologically but not culturally.

Summary: Adaption vs. Race

I can classify African from their skin color (very dark color) , which make them different than the Andean Indians which have a lighter color from what  have read, here we have a physical adaption included . but that doesn’t mean we can classify races only from their physical appearance because there could be an American Indian who is dark. So best way is to search and read a lot about each culture, their environmental, , cultural tradition and even their food are the key for anthropologist to be successful at categorize the population.

assignment 1

Part A

Holy: shrines is the word took my attention and that’s the reason I chose it and wanted tot talk a little about it, a shrine means a scared or holy place that  nacermia culture had at their houses , to devote their believes that human body is ugly and that its natural tendency is to debility and disease .

Leaders: medicine men are the most powerful practitioners in nacermia culture whom specialists in reading and writing a prescriptions for their clients that can only be read by medicine men since its wrote in an ancient and secret language.

Tradition: natives had Holy mouth men specialist that are known to be below medicine men , people visit holy mouth men one to twice a year to arrest decay and draw friends which is done by opening the client mouth, and enlarging holes using tools to create a decay then put magical materials.

torture: for examples the temples, which medicine men have in every size in every community, and there where a very sick patients are treated. The latipso temples are very harsh that is phenomenal that a fair proportion of very sick natives who enter the temple ever recovered.

Luxury : native’s life was expensive because they have to award the doctor and leaders so they can help them, they spend so many gifts so they can live.

Part B

I am from the Middle East, but reading and learning about a new culture is very interesting and I feel my words were really meaningful in describing the Nacremia culture by their life style, traditions and the specialists they have.

As a middle eastern, I am very used to traditions and some cultural habits that have been known hundreds years ago, choosing some of my words was based on my memory of some magical things Arabs used to and still do that is close to ingredients that medicine man make up in the natives culture which they believe its their ways of success, wealth and happiness.

When describing a culture, one should be respectful and understandable to their habit and traditions, because there is no way there is a culture with out traditions and personal believes. For example I sometimes don’t understand some people’s believes or acts, because I think it doesn’t make sense or I am not used to the way they think, and vice versa, some people in the American culture don’t understand some of my family’s thinking or traditions, since both of us lived in different cultures and grew up on different believes.
